Dr Elizabeth Klodas is leading a campaign to put diet front and center in the fight against heart disease. She realized that the drugs she put her patients on made them feel worse and that instead of healing them, she was creating a revolving door of follow-up visits.
Today, she is the founder of Step One Foods. Step One foods deliver clinically meaningful levels of the four essential nutrients required for cholesterol-lowering and heart health, including whole food fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and plant sterols.
Step One makes it easy for people to eat and enjoy a diet that includes fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and plant sterols, all of which have been shown to lower cholesterol. Ingredients include oat bran, chia, walnuts, almonds, as well as lots of fruit like raisins and blueberries, cranberries, strawberries.
Dr Klodas sat down with E Brian Johnson to share how she balances being a busy cardiologist, the founder of a successful startup, and the author and co-author of dozens of research papers.
Key Take-Aways
Four Pillars
Dr Klodas does her best to tend to the four pillars of radiant health each day: move your body, be socially interconnected, have an inner sense of purpose and joy - and eat whole food plants. She isn't always successful, but tomorrow is a new day and an opportunity to get back on track.
It's Never Too Late
Dr Klodas started working out at the tender age of fifty-four! She never thought of herself as being out of shape. She had always biked and skied. Then one day she went downstairs and got on the treadmill. That was her wake-up call.
From that day forward she woke up one hour earlier and went down to that treadmill every single day. Now, instead of a struggle, the treadmill calls to her every morning and it's a permanent part of her routine.
Get Outside
Every morning she walks her dog in the morning and goes for a minimum of three miles to enjoy the open air and green spaces. Only then will she reward herself with a morning coffee.
Three Days A Week
Dr Klodas tries to stick to a fairly regimented, plant-based eating approach, but she is not perfect! When she's in the office seeing patients, she often munches on apples in between patients and never actually stops for lunch. So on three days a week, she is not eating a formal lunch.
Prioritize Key Relationships
Dr Klodas has always prioritized her relationships, as a result, she has a supportive network. Her team of committed employees at Step One Foods and her loving relationship with her partner keeps her grounded and able to handle anything that comes her way.
Her Weekly Non-Negotiable
Every Saturday finds Dr Klodas in the care of her masseuse. "It's a non-negotiable 90 minutes of just you, without any interruptions, and you can think about whatever you want. Someone is taking care of ME, and that has really made a big impact on my sanity," says Dr Klodas.
Key Quote
"Every Saturday morning I have a massage, and that is amazing! It's 90 minutes for me. I'm not walking the dog. I'm not tending to my husband. I'm not growing a business. I'm not taking care of patients. Someone is taking care of ME, and that has really made a big impact on my sanity." - Dr Elizabeth Klodas MD
